Living Room Learning… A Huge Success
Well… what a crazy rollercoaster the last few months have been for everyone. I can certainly say for us, as a business who rely on being able to have over 100 people in a room together, we have certainly seen our share of highs and lows since March.
When our first event back in March got cancelled, we had about 6 days to pivot a 2 day live event into an online format. That week was an absolute whirlwind, but every participant who joined us for our Virtual Empower U said that it was a huge success.
So once we realised that this lockdown could last a while, we came up with an idea with the goal of keeping our community as connected as we could through a series of online activities, learnings, and workshops. We called it Living Room Learning, and since its inception, we have run over 150 sessions of everything from yoga and meditation to cooking classes, gratitude workshops, and magic shows.
The feedback that we got from the initiative showed that our community was really craving something during this time that would allow them to connect to this positive environment of young people who were all experiencing the same thing. It gave people opportunities to learn new skills, laugh, discover more about one another, and reconnect with the lessons and teachings of Empower U, which in our opinion, are more important than ever right now.
Each session was facilitated by either our Head Presenter, Brent, or one of our staff, if they had specific skills in a certain area. For example, we had our Assist Member Tommy facilitate a dance class, or Elise run a painting workshop, or Annika run a dessert cooking class. Our participants certainly expressed their gratitude for the sessions, and we were thrilled to hear that the initiative achieved its goal of keeping everyone socially connected and physically distant.

As our live events start to come back, we are excited at the prospect of utilising a mixture of live and online formats to complement the learning experience our participants will go through, and help them stay more connected to the program and each other than ever before.
